Spring is in the air. On some days anyway! So as we all emerge from our Winter bubbles we inevitably take more notice of our surroundings. With buds and blossoms appearing, daffodils and crocus bringing some colour to the streets, things are looking up. Except it could all do with a bit of a spruce up, don’t you agree? Because a Spring clean is not just an activity for your home. Office buildings and the surrounding areas can do with a helping hand too.
On the 22nd March, the organisation Keep Britain Tidy launches their initiative The Great British Spring Clean. This could be summarised as a month long litter pick, but it’s a lot more than that. Billed as ‘the country’s biggest ever mass-action environmental campaign’ it’s something that your office can really get behind to improve your working environment. You’ll even inspire some team building while you’re at it! If you’re partial to a hashtag, it’s #GBSpringClean so when you’re Instagramming your new office recycling bins, don’t forget to include it!
Inside your Office
Improve Office Recycling
Does your office have a recycling policy? If not, let this Spring be the time that you get it sorted. You don’t necessarily need shiny new recycling bins. All you need is the capability for your colleagues to separate their recycling waste, with an opportunity to recycle more materials.
Reducing Office Waste
Better still than recycling is waste reduction. Is your office structured in such a way as to encourage less waste? Do your social areas allow colleagues to prepare fresh food? Does your stationery cupboard discourage frivolous single use items?
Take Care of Your Building
Both inside and out, your office building forms part of your local environment. So ensure that it is properly maintained. Whether your office needs a full facelift or simply a refreshing decoration, the aesthetics of your building matter. External painting is often something that gets overlooked. However, this is vital to ward off ageing to the structure of the building. So, this Spring, schedule any paint work that is long overdue.
Outside your Office
Organise an Initiative
Across London, there are hundreds of initiatives designed to clear and clean up local community, school and public areas. If your business is looking for their next team building initiative, why not make it something that simultaneously improves the area around your office building? Work as a team to clear up your professional surroundings.
Get Involved in Corporate Volunteering
One way to improve the wellbeing of your staff is to maintain a fresh and vibrant working environment. So you’ve redecorated your office and structured your office layout to prioritise communication and creativity. What is there left to do? Corporate volunteering programmes are a great initiative for conscientious employers who prioritise employees’ wellbeing.
Aim for an Award
If you like the sound of fulfilling your corporate responsibility targets while simultaneously improving your office surroundings, take it one step further and go for The Green Space Business Award! For offices across London, there is always a green space either large or small just around the corner. It’s probably where most people go to eat their lunch during warmer months! So your office schemes that started with improving your recycling can even get your brand out there as a local environmental figurehead!
Of course, taking care of your office building and corporate environment is a year round responsibility. Initiatives such as the GB Spring Clean are great to get you focussed and active. However, it’s important not to let it slip. Your office building is important to its locality and should be cared for and maintained. And once you’ve appointed your regular office decorator, you’re one step further to achieving the kind of environment that looks great in Spring sunshine!
