With the advent of March, we have finally entered meteorological Spring. The evenings are noticeably lighter every day. Daffodils are winking in the unpredictable sunlight, giving a much missed splash of colour to the landscape. Our feathered, furry and amphibious friends are back in the neighbourhood and are making themselves heard. We all feel that we can achieve a lot more in the increasing minutes of daylight, and in the time that we save by not having to insert our bodies into several layers of fabric before venturing anywhere. The scope for potential is heavy in the air.
So what better time to embark on a thorough freshening up of your work space?
According to a 2004 study, office work stations contain nearly 400 times as many germ microbes than toilets. It’s something that no one wants to think about very much. However, when over 75% of workers say they are more productive when their office is clean, it’s worth embarking on that deep clean of desk areas.
Purge your junk
It’s not just about a sweep and polish, though. Financial and contractual documents aside, if you’ve not looked at it for a year you probably don’t need it. To the shredder! While it is proven that personal items and decoration in a workspace boosts staff morale, do you really need to have an accumulated collection of 26 biros (including several that you KNOW don’t work but just haven’t got around to putting in the bin)? The stationary cupboard is there for a reason.
Fresh faced colour
A lick of paint works wonders for a space, we all know that, and regular redecoration keeps a space feeling positive and helps to keep maintenance issues at bay. But you needn’t embark on a top to bottom redecoration with every season. Give some attention to any worn or damaged areas and spaces of high traffic and the whole space can feel rejuvenated.
Rethink your space
Now that the desks in your office are no longer groaning under the weight of a thousand bits of stationary, take a moment to consider if the layout is really working for you. Does it support the flow of work and communication through the business? Especially important for businesses that are growing and evolving, a reshuffle of space can have a tremendous impact on the day to day.
As the warmer months become more imminent, perhaps outerwear storage can seem less necessary – however remember that we live in a country where you will need a coat for at least six months of the year. And a brolly… well, for most of it probably… So the space allocated to store this stuff for employees and visitors is actually paramount to the overall tidiness and functionality of your working space.
Use the light
From a decorating perspective, increasing hours of natural light are a joy. You’ll notice that the appearance of colour is unavoidably altered in synthetic light, which can make your office space seem to change its appearance with the seasons. This is why it is paramount, when choosing a colour in your initial decoration process, to look at the visual impact in both natural and electric lighting states. If your office is extra funky and features a variety of lighting moods and colours, make sure that these both complement your walls and are appropriate to the season.
There’s a method of freshening up to suit us all. Even if your heart’s not in it you can surely find time to vaguely pass a disinfectant wipe around your telephone mouthpiece. If this is all you can manage then don’t worry, we won’t judge. Commit a bit more time and thought, though, and your entire workforce will feel the benefit.
